When Grandpa Dandelion,
is reciting a poem
Half a walnut shell,
looking very swell.
My little walnut boat,
how it likes to float.
It is a perfect size,
for my birthday prize.
I spin all around,
it is very sound.
Floating on the water,
it gets much hotter.
I ended my little ride,
and became normal size.
I watched the shell go away,
I’ll do it again another day.

Replica of my 1949 Ford
which cost $250.00 in 1968
Right next to a car repair business, and when I pushed my forty-niner into the business, the car mechanic hoisted it into the air to take a look. He saw that the cotter pin was missing from the clutch rod and the clutch pedal.
He told me, "It will take 5 minutes to replace the pin, and it'll cost eight dollars to replace."
I shouted, “Eight Bucks." Why so much?”
Being much older and taller than I, he bent down and looked me in the eye.
He said in a firm, calm voice, “Calm down, son. You are paying me for what I know, not what I do.”
I shrugged my shoulders, nodded my head, smiled, and meekly said, “OK.”
$8.00 was equal to four hours' pay in 1969, and I didn't have a spare cotter pin in my pocket. I was sure the pin cost less than five cents, but eight dollars for labor? That felt like Highway Robbery to me.
I bought my ’49 Ford in March of 1968, from a guy who needed money for taxes. It was my first car, and in 1969, it got me to work on time.

On a stop in Ketchikan, Alaska, a retired fishing boat captain gave me permission to record his story.
I was reminded of my Great-Great-Grandfather, John Rook, who was also a riverboat Captain on the Mississippi River in the 1890s.
Captain Rook is on my Mom's branch of our family tree.
Here is an amazing fact, I took a picture of my ear and there is a 90 percent match.
I found his picture on the University of Wisconsin -Madison Libraries
I am sure he had stories to tell during his retirement. Meeting at a cafe along the Mississippi River in downtown Princeton, Iowa.
Chumming with his lifelong breakfast buddies, reliving the days of memories never forgotten.
Watch "Ketchikan Dam : The Truth : The Legend" a story told by a retired fishing boat Captain, living near the watefalls.
